The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced a reduction of two working hours per day for private sector employees during the Holy Month of Ramadan, in accordance with Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations and its amendments. This decision adheres to the legal framework governing labour relations in the UAE.
As per the stipulations of the law, employers are required to implement this reduction in working hours for the duration of Ramadan. Additionally, the MoHRE has said “In accordance with the requirements and nature of their work, companies may apply flexible or remote work patterns within the limits of the daily working hours during Ramadan”.
Furthermore, any additional hours worked beyond the reduced schedule may be considered overtime, for which workers will be entitled to extra compensation, in accordance with UAE labour law.
After the UAE’s International Astronomy Centre announced the sighting of the Shaban crescent moon on February 10, it is anticipated that the first day of Ramadan will commence on March 11 this year, initiating the 30-day period of fasting.
Implementing these measures ensures compliance with UAE labor law for both employers and employees, accommodating religious observances during Ramadan.
